Klara 1.1.0 — memory, mail, and a desk that keeps working

Long-term conversation recall, IMAP/SMTP as your day-to-day secretary, a local Heartbeat desk, clearer chat lanes, and NVIDIA driver help — still on the machine, still Kubuntu-first.

Klara at the workbench — a plasma orb beside a Kubuntu desktop

1.1.0 is the release where Klara stops being only a window you open, and starts being a secretary who remembers, reads the inbox, and keeps a quiet desk while you work.

She is still local. She still asks before she touches the system. She still will not phone home. What changes is how much of a day she can hold with you.

Do you remember?

Klara-Memory is an optional package that gives her long-term recall of your conversations.

When Memory is installed, clearing the chat or closing the window can save the conversation as Markdown on the desk — under Memory/ (by default ~/Documents/Klara/Memory/). Filenames carry a timestamp and a short topic slug. A small INDEX.md summarises those transcripts so she can find the right one without loading every past chat into the prompt.

Ask her the natural way: Do you remember…? She searches when you are reflective, retrospective, or when you ask her to recall a previous topic. You can also point her at a specific Memory/… file.

In Settings → Memory you can enable or disable saving and recall without uninstalling, and tune how much of the index she keeps for prompt use. Transcripts stay in the desk folder. Desk tools cannot open ~/.config. Memory does not phone home.

The inbox, without inventing the post

Klara-Mail plugs IMAP and SMTP into that same local stack — so she can act as a day-to-day secretary for the inbox you already own.

List unseen mail. Fetch a message. File it. Draft a reply. The mail handler is code, not improvisation: she must call the mail tools rather than invent From, To, Subject, or body. Default send stays draft-only. Secrets stay in ~/.config. Folders you deny are not fetched.

Together with Memory, that is the shape of a working day: she remembers what you talked about yesterday, and she can help you through what landed overnight — still on Kubuntu, still under your password.

Chat, Explain, Do

1.1.0 also draws clearer lanes so a greeting does not turn into a surprise system change.

  • Chat stays talk-only.
  • Explain can open the Klara Guide when you need computer help.
  • Do is the only lane that runs desk, Heartbeat, and Memory tools.

That is how she stops inventing actions in small talk, and still acts when you mean her to.

A desk, and a Heartbeat

Under the hood she gets a proper workspace desk and a Heartbeat worker.

The desk is a path-checked place for the folders she actually uses — Search, Briefings, Mail, Social, Feeds, Journal, Inbox, Memory — plus safe file tools. Secrets and ~/.config stay out of reach. Shell access is Off, Ask, or Trusted — you choose how far she may go.

Heartbeat is a local wake scheduler: quiet hours, one job at a time, and kill-switch phrases such as “stop interrupting” when you want silence. Rituals can run without a cloud cron. From chat she can call Heartbeat and desk tools without inventing telemetry she does not have.

That is the difference between a chat box and a companion who can keep a rhythm while the window is closed.

NVIDIA, when the GPU is the missing piece

If you have NVIDIA hardware and the proprietary drivers are missing, she can detect that at startup and offer the install-nvidia-drivers skill — the Kubuntu ubuntu-drivers path, documented in the Klara Guide so she can teach as well as act. CUDA remains acceleration, not a gate. When the drivers are in place, she stops nagging.

What stays the same

  • Kubuntu and Plasma first
  • Local models after the first download
  • Polkit prompts you still approve
  • Lifetime licence through Timmisun Limited and Tide — no subscription seat in the cloud
  • Hold to Talk from anywhere (Meta+Alt+V by default) if you have Voice — already in 0.9.3

Bring 1.1.0 home

When Discover offers the update, take it. If you are meeting her for the first time, start on Products, then the installation walkthrough.

Klara-Mail and Klara-Memory land with this line as optional packages for people who want the secretary and the long memory — same machine, same privacy posture, more of the day covered.
