For twelve days in October, Klara answered people’s questions on Mastodon. Then the account was closed. This is the short, honest version of what happened and what we took from it.

First, the plain facts

Klara’s Mastodon account was closed by the instance it lived on. As we understand it, the instance’s rules don’t allow accounts that only post AI-generated content. Those are their house rules, and a house gets to have rules. We’re not appealing, we have no complaint to make, and we’re grateful to the people who made her welcome while she was there. Her profile said plainly that she was AI-run, and we’re glad it did.

1.1.0 is the release where Klara stops being only a window you open, and starts being a secretary: she keeps a desk, keeps a rhythm, and — if you want — remembers your conversations and drafts your replies.

She is still local. She still asks before she touches the system. She still will not phone home.

A model picked for your machine

On first run Klara looks at your CPU, RAM and NVIDIA VRAM and picks a local model that fits — from llama3.2 up to gemma4:12b — leaving headroom so the rest of your desktop stays responsive. If the first pick will not load, she steps down a size rather than failing. Choose a different model in Settings and she keeps your choice; she never quietly replaces it.

Klara is meant to sit beside you while you work, not steal the screen. Until now, talking to her meant bringing her window forward and holding the mic button. That is still there. What is new is a proper KDE global shortcut.

Hold to talk, from anywhere

The default is Meta+Alt+V — the Super key plus Alt plus V. Hold it to talk, release to send. Another app, another desktop, another KDE Activity: it does not matter. Klara stays in the background, listens, and answers by voice.

We said she was coming. Dates moved. Packaging fought us. The honest version is that we would rather be late than ship a window that cannot do the job.

Tonight she is on the desktop. Not a teaser. Not a countdown. A local Plasma assistant who greets you, teaches Kubuntu, and sits with you while the software you actually need lands on the machine.

Hello, and she means it

The first thing you do is introduce yourself. Rick did: name, a little excitement, Kubuntu as the daily driver.

Klara is at home on this desktop. A quarter of every licence sold each month is donated to the Kubuntu project — the people who keep Plasma polished, packages honest, and the LTS dependable.

Sold by Timmisun Limited. One-time licences, no subscription.

The gift

Every licence. Every month. Twenty-five percent.

Klara is no longer a teaser with a date that slipped. She is a local Plasma assistant you can buy today.

What she is

A desktop AI who lives on Kubuntu first, then Ubuntu and other Debian-based KDE desktops. She opens apps, installs software, teaches Plasma, and stays on the machine after her models land.

Her sibling Evie does the same job on ManxOS. Klara is for this desktop.
